The Speech-Body Connection
28th August, 2025The Speech-Body Connection: How Posture, Breath, and the Tongue shape Communication
At first it may seem strange that a speech pathologist is working in a clinic with chiropractors though I actually fit in like a “glove”. We have many cross referrals of both adults and children. My room is the first as you enter the clinic, maybe it is the first place to start?
Effective speech is far more than vocal cords moving- it is a full body process relying on posture, breath support, integration of primitive reflexes and precise, accurate tongue and lip movements.
Stable upright posture supports clarity as the diaphragm can move freely to allow for strong breath support for clear speech and correct tongue resting position on the palate. Poor posture compresses the diaphragm which limits air and causes the tongue to fall backward. This in turn strains the jaw and facial muscles and can create an incorrect swallow pattern.
Breath is the fuel for voice. Improving breath support can significantly enhance overall communication and reduce vocal strain.
In my room you will see artwork on my wall and cushions with various tongue positions. The shape and position of the tongue does not only affect speech clarity. It affects airway health, swallowing, jaw development and sleep.
I also work as an orofacial myofunctional therapist which links posture, breathing and tongue position. This is almost like a “chiropractor” for the face, jaw and mouth.
The key objectives of orofacial myofunctional therapy are:
- To establish correct muscle function which ensures that the muscles of the face and mouth are working together, including correct tongue position, closed lips and nasal breathing.
- To improve breathing by encouraging nasal breathing to help reduce sleep apnoea and improve overall respiratory health.
- To enhance swallowing and chewing
- To improve speech
So, the whole body is very connected. Connecting all the pieces helps fulfill the aim of Beyond Self which is “the art of staying well” and I love being part of this.
I am at Beyond Self alternate Tuesdays and every Thursday & Friday. New clients welcome.
