Impact of Cognitive Testing

I have had both of my children tested for ADHD amongst other things. When
they were youngerI used to be against putting a label on things but as they
got older and started to attend school I started to realise how important it was
if I wanted to get any kind of support from the school. Also, I am from the
school of thought that if I don’t know what it is, then how can I go about
helping or fixing it.
Once they had been tested I felt almost relieved to hear of
the ADHD diagnosis, finally there was a reason behind their little quirks and
behaviours. The reports I received were then sent to the school with
recommendations on what to do in and out of the classroom, all of their
teachers have told me that they have found the reports very useful, and the
report gets sent to each new teacher every year.
From my end, I have been able to support them with their needs better as I know what I am dealing with.
From my child’s perspective, they have also found it helpful knowing what
their individual diagnosis is, we are able to talk it through, read books and
watch youtube clips about their diagnosis and it makes it all very easy to
explain. I have found that I am able to put a positive spin on it for them.
It can all feel quite overwhelming at first but remember that knowledge is
power.
